Hi all!
Recently the lyrics from Everybody's Changing by Keane have been running through my head. Not just because I love the song, but because the message has always seemed to be the main topic in my life.
"Everybody's changing and I don't feel the same"
Change
Why is change so scary? And why does it have to occur?
If you haven't asked these questions, you roll with the punches. I, on the other hand, have asked myself this question countless times throughout my life and even to this day still do.
So, let me give you some insight as to why this must happen, and why, even if it doesn't seem like it at the time, it's good for you.
Disclaimer: I am not a professional psychologist or therapist, but speak of my own experience.
1. Constant Change
You must understand one thing: whether we want it to or not, this world is constantly changing. You were born as a wee little baby, but you didn't remain in that state.
You had to continue growing. First, turn over to your tummy, then crawl, stand, walk, mumble, and talk.
It is set in motion and we can't change that.
One day you are in a happy family, the next your parents are split. You celebrate your 6th birthday party and then in a flash, you are 15 and learning to drive.
Change is inevitable, but with it comes personal experience, knowledge, and growth.
2. Why Change is Good
So what is good about change?
A few months back I drove through my old neighborhood. I parked across from my old house and just couldn't believe my eyes. The once-beaten-down and aged home was now an updated modern home with a wonderful detached garage with living space upstairs.
I can recall my childhood experiences in that home. All the good and all the bad. The tears of sadness and the tears of joy. The friends made and now the friends lost.
I never thought that my home could be fixed. I always thought it would remain the same. But as I looked at the home while I was parked, I saw how it was a completely new home, it finally sank in.
If that home, as old as it was could be renewed for the better, then change must be good.
Doesn't matter what you go through, bullies, obesity, divorce, promotions, adventures, happy times, low times, all of it is for the better.
Each phase of life provides experience and knowledge and with that knowledge, you apply it and continue growing. You learn what to do and what not to do.
You avoid things you know will hurt you and you find ways to heal from the pain you went through.
You find someone who loves you for who you are and create a family together. You start raising your kids and notice that you are not the same person as you were before. You are happy and content.
Or maybe you don't have a family, but you are now living for yourself. You are free, and you are happy.
No matter what you have gone through, what you are going through now, and what is to come, take a moment and ask yourself, what do you need to take from this?
And if you feel that you haven't changed or you can't, know that change is for you!
What's The Point?
If you have come to this part of this post you are now asking yourself why I read this. What is the point?
Well, the point that I want to give you and the challenge is to take a pause.
During this pause, look at where you were in your darkest times, and where you are now.
Look at what you have accomplished and how far you have come.
Then use that to look to the future and work on what you would like to accomplish and where you would want to be.
This all centers on your purpose.
Your purpose is to do the things that bring you joy.
So do it!
